May 2025 New Plate Issuance
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing the new state license plate – The Pine Tree Plate – on May 1, 2025. This will impact the majority of Maine residents.
Pine Tree Plate – this design features a pine tree and a blue star, inspired by the 1901 Maine flag.
The No Tree Plate – this is a plate design with blue identification numbers and letters against a white background, available only for PC class plates.
What does the transition to new plate look like?
The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles will no longer issue chickadee plates starting May 1, 2025
Those with current chickadee plates will be given the new plate when renewing a registration or obtaining a new registration on or after May 1, 2025.
What do I need to do to obtain my new plates?
You can choose either the Pine Tree plate or No Tree plate for no additional cost at the time of registration.
You can also choose one of the current specialty plates, which will come with normal fees.
What if I have a vanity plate?
If you have a vanity plate and want to keep your current number, you can reserve it for the new plate.
